New Opioid Report Released by the Office of the President

A report released this month by the Office of the President includes data outlining Opioid-involved Overdoes Deaths by Age in 2015.  The greatest number of deaths occurred in people ages 25-55.

The Report goes on to discuss the reasons that opioids are largely prescribed due to their effectiveness in reducing acute pain and as anesthesia during surgery.  It then describes the risk of high potential for abuse when users substitute more lethal opioids like heroin or illicitly produced fentanyl.

A survey conducted by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) indicated that 2.4 million Americans have an opioid-use disorder  which includes individuals who abuse prescription painkillers
such as OxyContin and Vicodin and individuals who abuse heroin or other illicit opioids.
